Chocolate + Avocados = Dessert

by Nicole on June 14, 2011

How is everyone doing today? My day yesterday kind of dragged, but I enjoyed a nice workout at the gym after work. I’ve kinda, sorta been following Body For Life, to the beat of my own drum. I will do a complete post on it next week, but basically I’m doing 3 days of strength training and using heavier weights. I’m following the strength training plan that goes with the book, but I’m not really doing the suggested cardio.

On the days I do strength training, I’ve been doing 20-30 minutes of HIIT (high intensity interval training) on the elliptical. This is the beginning of my third week doing it and I’m liking it so far. Like I said, more to come next week!

Last Friday I went to a small dinner party at my friends, Lauren and John’s apartment in the city. In usual fashion, I had to contribute something. When I’m going to a friend’s house to eat, I usually like to bring an appetizer and/or a dessert. I knew I didn’t have enough time to do both, so I went with Trader Joe’s garlic lovers hummus, edamame hummus, lentil chips and red, white and blue tortilla chips (all from Trader Joe’s).

For dessert, I wanted to try something new. I usually don’t make new things to bring to share with friends, but I knew these friends would be up for it…that and it was from Angela from Oh She Glows, and I’ve never made a recipe from her that disappointed anyone.

So Chilled Double Chocolate Torte it was.

Ingredients

Maybe you’ve heard of avocados in chocolate mousse, maybe you haven’t. If you haven’t, well take this as your personal invitation to try it now.

I love this recipe. It’s indulgent and decadent, but made of REAL whole foods. It’s barely processed, has no white sugar or flour and tastes amazing.

nut based crust

mousse

I used Angela’s exact recipe, except I used 4 avocados, because mine seemed small and I left out the arrowroot powder because  I didn’t have any. So go get some pecans, cocoa powder, coconut oil, maple syrup, vanilla, avocados, almond milk and chocolate chips, and make this! No baking, no hot oven, just 2 hours in the freezer and you’re good to go!

Oh and don’t tell anyone it’s made with avocados, see if they can guess! My friends couldn’t…until I gave them a few hints!

Have a great day!

I saw the recipe for Angela’s Torte a few days ago and thought it looked delicious. I’m glad to hear it was a success for you!

I’ve made chocolate avocado pudding before that was quite tasty – I need to do that again. :)

I tried to sneak avacado into a smoothie for Keith once and he immediately said the texture was off and he didn’t like it. I thought that was crazy! I love adding avacado into my smoothie because it makes it creamy and adds in healthy fats. Never a bad thing. Keith is just crazy! ha!

I did this once and it came out kind of gross. I’ll try it again using this recipe though. I hate failing in the kitchen!

I love the way you put how you were doing that workout to the beat of your own drum. Too funny! The torte looks amazing! I hope you’re having a great day today!

I love Angela! I just made a cookie recipe of hers last weekend and let me tell you, I’ve never been so happy with a cookie in my life!

I’ve never been disappointed with anything of hers either…

I’ve made this dessert a few times! It’s easy and SO good!

I grew up in the Philippines where avocados are more commonly used for dessert than savory dishes – so this sounds absolutely delicious to me! Will definitely be giving it a try soon :)
