Happy Veteran’s Day! and HAPPY, HAPPY, Birthday to my mama! Because today is all about mom and not about me, this post is 100% for her. I hope that you all have a mother that you cherish as much as I do. I am thankful for her daily, but always like to appreciate her a little more on her birthday, especially on 11/11/11!
So to let you know my mom a little bit better, here are 11 things my mom has taught me.
1. A homemade meal is always better than takeout. Going along with that, never order an Italian meal not in an Italian restaurant.
2. Always lock up and set the alarm. She says this religiously. Even when I’m not in or near the house. She says it even more when I call her to tell her my ipod was taken out of my car because I forgot to lock it. And yes, that was yesterday.
3. Gotta have eyes everywhere!! This refers to driving and being able to see everyone and know what their next move is going to be while driving. She also always says to stay 2 car lengths behind the car in front of you.
4. Going along with number 1, jarred sauce is never acceptable. There is always time to make a quick marinara.
5. “Don’t worry about them, worry about ya’self.” So true. Focus on yourself and what you are doing, instead of wondering what others will think of you.
6. Always do the right thing. Maybe I don’t do this 100% of the time, but I really do try to. I may say things that aren’t always the nicest, but they really do come from the right place.
7. Family is the most important thing you have. Make sacrifices and do what you need to do to spend time with them, especially for important events.
8. Always listen to your mother, she really knows her stuff. And her stuff is in regard to everything, food, lighting, construction, backsplashes, etc.
9. Must be groomed. No stray eyebrows or anything else allowed. Ever.
10. Cards. Cards for everything. Gotta have cards. Can’t be just one, has to be 3 or 4. The more the better and often for no reason at all.
11. Follow your heart. I try my best to listen to her advice and do this and it really always leads me in the right direction.
And please know that all of these things are said with a very thick New York accent.
Obviously I could go on for many more than 11 things she has taught me, but I tried to highlight the ones that stick in my head everyday.
Happy Birthday Mom! Love you!
Does your mom have a mantra or something she repeats, over and over again?
